Anderson & Garland can trace its origins back to 1840 and today they are not only the premier Fine Art auction house in the North East, but also one of the largest and fastest growing provincial auctioneers of fine art and antiques in the UK.

With their new purpose built salerooms in Newcastle, together with their saleroom at Alnwick and representative in Berwick, they cover the large area between Yorkshire and Edinburgh.

With an unwavering focus on client satisfaction you will be dealing with a firm committed to excellence, which can draw on a wealth of resources including a valuation team of highly respected valuers with a combined experience of over 150 years in the business.

Throughout its history the company has developed expertise in many fields and currently offers sales ranging from fine pictures, furniture, ceramics, silver and jewellery through to books and toys.

They hold up to 16 Catalogue sales of select antiques and collectors items each year, together with approx 40 sales of general antiques and quality furnishings. Every lot is fully listed on their website, with photographs where appropriate.

Prices achieved often exceed expectations. Their record so far for an individual item is £242, 000.

Catalogues
These are available from the Auction rooms and are currently priced at up to £10 for select sales. Catalogue subscription is available at a reduced rate. Catalogues of all sales, including general sales, appear on this and other collectors websites, together with images of lots, where appropriate.

Viewing of sales
Prospective purchasers of goods are provided with every opportunity to view the broad range of items available, with specialist staff in attendance either at the saleroom or on line to answer any questions. Viewing usually takes place during the two or three days before each sale at the salerooms. Photographs of many of the lots are to be found on their website.

Catalogue descriptions
Care is taken to ensure that any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date and provenance is reliable and accurate. All such statements are opinion only and are not taken as statements or representations of fact. Bidders are strongly recommended to personally inspect the lot for which they intend to bid.

Condition reports
While an identification of damage is given in some instances, an absence of such advice does not imply the lot is free from defect. If called upon to do so, they will give a verbal condition report on a particular item without charge or obligation, as a matter of courtesy. Obligation over the printed or oral descriptions applied to sale items is limited. Prospective purchasers are strongly advised to inspect any lot on which they intend to bid. All measurements and weights are approximate and should be verified by intending purchasers. Please refer to clauses 2, 3 and 7 of the conditions of sale.

Buyer registration
Prospective buyers are requested to register before the sale so that full details of their name, address, banker’s details and other relevant information can be recorded. This can be done at the viewing, or just prior to the sale at their registration counter just beyond the reception area.

Bidding
They operate a buyer number system. Those prospective buyers who complete the registration set out above will be issued with a bidding paddle just before the sale. During the sale this should be raised clearly and promptly to signify your bid, allowing sufficient time for the auctioneer to note your number, should you be successful in securing the lot. Please return your paddle at the end of the sale.

Absentee bidding
If you are unable to attend the sale in person and would like the auctioneer to bid on your behalf, please complete an absentee bidding form. These forms must be submitted to the sales office at least half an hour before the sale commences. They will try to secure the item for you as reasonably as is allowed by other bids and the reserve price, if any. Commissions placed by telephone, fax or E-mail are made only at the buyers own risk

Telephone bids
Alternatively, the buyer may choose to bid by telephone on the day of the sale. Providing the lot is estimated to be above £250, they will be pleased to call you for this purpose shortly before the lot in which you are interested comes under the hammer. As the number of telephone lines is limited, early booking is recommended. (They also recommend that you leave an “emergency cover” bid in case they are unable to reach you by telephone.)

Buyers premium
The purchaser shall pay the hammer price together with a buyers’ premium of 15% of the hammer price plus VAT, on the buyers’ premium only.

Payment
All purchases must be paid for and removed within two working days after the sale. Their terms are cash, cheque supported by a guarantee card, bankers draft, credit or debit cards. A 1.5% surcharge will be added to credit card transactions.

Collection
They regret that they are unable to send items to purchasers by post, although they can recommend a number of carriers and shippers to assist with collection and delivery. All lots should be paid for and collected within 2 working days of the sale. Lots not removed and paid for by then will be removed to store at the purchasers expense. The removal charge is £5 per lot. The storage is £1 per lot per day.

Please read their other terms and conditions on their website.
