WHAT SORT OF CAR CAN YOU BUY AT AUCTION?

Think very carefully about what you really need and whether you will be able to afford the running expenses of the type of car or van you choose.

There is obviously no point in a 2+2 if it's your only car and you have two teenage children who have been drinking milk. But if you only have two kids, will a conventional car be a more sensible choice than an MPV or a 4x4?

4x4s are all the rage these days, mainly because they're the only vehicles that cope well with road humps. A petrol-engined version will cost you at least 50% more in fuel than a diesel. Yet a diesel may be a lot slower. And is the expense of maintaining four-wheel-drive justified by not having to slow down so much before running over a sleeping policeman?

If you've got six kids, do you go for an MPV or a 7-seater 4x4? Check the way the seats fold first. On some, the rearmost seats are a single bench, so you can't fold one of them away to create more luggage capacity when travelling six-up.

WHAT MAKE AND MODEL OF CAR TO BUY AT AUCTION?

Britain is probably the most car-snobbish country in the World. This is both a burden and a benefit.

It always costs more to 'buy into' a prestige brand. But if at the end of the day you end up no worse off, then you've done all right. You've enjoyed the enhanced status the car has bestowed upon you. It will be much easier to sell. And it's cost you no more than a run-of-the-mill motor.

For example, a 15,000-mile Ford Mondeo GLXTD with aircon can theoretically make a retail purchase-to-trade-in loss of £3,000 over a year.

On the other hand, a VW Passat TDISE 90 with aircon can theoreticallly make a retail-to-trade-in loss of £3,175 over a year.

So the car that makes you look more like a company director than a company rep has cost you all of £175 more over the year. It may even work out costing you less if you sell it privately. It's likely to be easier to sell. And, as both cars get older, the car that carries the status hangs on to proportionately more or its value.

The same apples to Mercedes, to BMW, to Audi and to cars like the relatively new small Lexus IS200.
